Zoysia Grass Seed (agriCOTE Enhanced) – 100% Zoysia Grass Seed

Zoysia Grass (Japonica) is a warm season tropical grass that stands up to heat, drought and heavy wear and tear. This means its active growth starts in early or late spring, depending on location and peaks in the hot summer months.

Zoysia has a dark green leaf tone, medium leaf size and enhanced density, providing a beautiful lush cover. Zoysia Grass is an excellent choice for shade, coping well with 40% shade for wear areas, and 50% shade for low wear areas perfect for grassed areas that have overhanging foliage.

Zoysia is hardy and can withstand heavy use, being very resistant to damage. This hardiness extends to the conditions that it will grow in. Zoysia doesn’t need an overly fertile soil to happily grow, nor does it need to be regularly fertilised.

Zoysia is a low maintenance grass and a very slow grower which means less time mowing. Despite having runners that allow the grass to spread, it does not overtake the lawn and interrow too quickly. All Zoysia grass varieties spread by surface stolons and underground rhizomes. The presence of rhizomes also increases the hardiness of the variety, for winter survival or drought tolerance.

Zoysia is drought, heat and salt tolerant. It also stands up well under heavy wear and tear. It is recommended for shaded areas in Northern Australia but will always prefer being in a more sunny position. Zoysia does not tolerate cold weather very well meaning active growth starts in early or late spring, depending on location and peaks in the hot summer months. It should only be planted in the warmer regions of Australia where other warm season lawns are grown, such as Buffalo and Couch. It is not recommended for Victoria or Tasmania as it does not perform well in frost.

Zoysia grass has the ability to remain alive in conditions that most other grasses would perish in. The root system is amongst the deepest for grasses and adapts easily to numerous soil types, from sand to clay. However, there is a downside. Zoysia grass is very susceptible to cold conditions and is, therefore, best suited to warm climates. In cooler areas, zoysia grass will turn brown and unless or until warm conditions return, this grass will lay dormant.

Zoysia is recommended for use in Lawns, Commercial Landscapes, Sporting Fields & Golf Courses.

Directions Of Use

Seeding Rates

New Turf

10 grams per square meter (1kg’s/100m2).

Overseeding

Planting Tips:

  • Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking.
  • Plant into soft top soil or sandy loam.  Zoysia grass seed needs light to germinate, so the seed should be at or very near the surface of the soil for the best germination results.
  • Best coverage and reduced seed wastage is achieved by using a seed spreader for the size of the area.
  • Soil must remain damp throughout the germination period and must be maintained for at least 1-2 weeks after sowing, through irrigation or natural rainfall.
  • Apply fertiliser several times per year to improve the overall look and performance of the lawn.

Tips For Use

Planting:

  • Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking.
  • Plant into soft top soil or sandy loam.  Zoysia grass seed needs light to germinate, so the seed should be at or very near the surface of the soil for the best germination results.

  • Apply fertiliser several times per year to improve the overall look and performance of the lawn.

Planting Time:

  • Zoysia is a warm season grass and sowing should occur when night time temperatures are consistently above 18 degrees celsius and day time temperatures exceed 28 degrees.
  • Allow 3 months for establishment before the onset of Autumn or any significantly cooler weather.
  • Best sown in warmer temperate and tropical zones of Australia.

Germination:

  • 28 days-6 weeks, climate dependent. Can be up to approximately 8 weeks in cooler climates or sub-optimal conditions.
  • A soil temperature of 18-25 degrees at a 5cm depth will give the most immediate germination results.

Water:

  • With the seed so close to the surface, it should be watered quite frequently with light water applications until germination is complete. This will keep the seedlings from drying out as they sprout. Once established it tolerates low water and drought conditions well.

Fertilising:

  • To ensure successful germination it is essential to apply a starter fertiliser when sowing your grass seed.

First Mowing:

  • First mowing when it reaches 5cm in height.

Mowing Frequency:

  • More frequent mowing will increase the turf density of any of the Zoysia varieties.

Caring for Zoysia Grass:

  • Once zoysia grass has established itself, it requires little maintenance.
  • Seasonal fertilizing is usually sufficient.
  • Continual mowing is not a concern with this type of grass; however, when mowing zoysia grass, cut it at a shorter height, around 2.5 to 5 cm.
  • Although there are few insect or disease problems associated with zoysia grass, it does occur. The most common problem encountered with zoysia is thatch, which consists of layers of decomposed roots.
  • This brown, spongy material can be found just above the soil surface and should be removed with a power rake in early summer.
